Biofilmography
Alejandro Alvarado and Concha Barquero (Málaga, 1975) have formed a personal and professional tandem since 2001. Graduates in Audiovisual Communication from the University of Málaga, they specialize respectively in creative documentary and script from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Since then, they have explored the expressive and experiential possibilities of cinema that works with reality.
With a wide professional career in cultural and informative television within the Tesis program (2001-2011) of Canal Sur Andalucía, a reference space awarded, among others, with the Award for the Best National Outreach Program Scientific at the XXVI Biennial of Scientific Cinema of Ronda, her films have traveled paths of greater artistic freedom. Alvarado makes his debut with the experimental short film 1891 voltios, cariño (1999), an award-winning film, among others, at the Pescara International Unimovie Festival and present at prestigious festivals such as the European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück. His second short film was the creation documentary El espejo del Sr. Rovira (2000) with the special participation of the writer Juan Marsé.
They have co-directed numerous short films that explore the frontiers between fiction and documentary, among others, La Chimenea (2003), Mi hermana (2006) and Tanta gente sola (2011). At the same time, they have written and directed numerous documentaries of a social nature, such as El reverso de la realidad (2007) and Warmi. Algunos apuntes sobre La Paz y sus mujeres (2014).
His feature film debut was with the documentary Pepe el andaluz (2012). This autobiographical film delves into historical and family memory and identity in the form of the thriller and the travel diary. With a long history in festivals and theaters around the world, the film has been awarded 10 prizes, among them the Best Spanish Documentary in Documenta Madrid or the “Borders, Migrations and Exiles” Award at the VIII Festival Against Silence, All the Voices, Mexico.
Parallel to their professional career, they have combined their careers in teaching and research. In 2010, Alvarado began his collaboration as an associate professor at the Faculty of Communication at the University of Malaga. For her part, Barquero has been a researcher at the Andalusian Observatory of Sexist Violence of the Audiovisual Media, UMA (2013-14).
